The plan

Melanie & Cristian · Two-storey, three-bedroom machiya

Inspired by Japan’s art islands, Melanie and Cristian wanted a home for creative work and hospitality.

Choosing the home

Buying from abroad was difficult. They chose a 1960s Uno Port machiya with a garden and former tea school, empty for seven years.

How Nostal helped

Purchase support and ryokan licensing coordination

Ryo helped with US-based online viewings, purchase, language barriers and the ryokan permit.

Life at the time of the interview

At the interview, renovation was complete and Sadou Inn had opened: two large suites and one smaller room for up to nine guests. Residencies, gatherings and workshops were future ideas.
